Consumer Welfare

SANKALP has been playing a pioneering role for the welfare of the consumers at the national level. It has been organising comprehensive integrated multi-pronged programmes to protect and promote the rights of the consumers of Delhi and Orissa, especially the unaware and vunerable sections.

The following programmes are being undertaken by SANKALP:

  • consumer awareness and consumer literacy
  • training, orientation and refreshers programmes
  • community-centred rural awareness projects
  • consumer guidance bureaus
  • action research

A National Policy Document on Consumer Welfare was brought out in 1997 by SANKALP, edited by four senior judicial personalities of the country (including, Justice S. N. Phukan, the then Chief Justice of Orissa High Court and now Judge, Supreme Court of India)with a foreward by Justice V. Balakrishna Eradi, President, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. The document has focussed on four major components of consumer affairs activities in the country: i) Redressal Agencies and Their Functioning, ii) Consumer Protection Act, iii) Consumer Awareness and Consumer Education and iv) Role of NGOs in Consumer Welfare Programmes.
