Innovative Features
The learning and teaching practices have been developed to respond to the learner’s diverse needs. The emphasis is on curriculum differentiation. The curriculum has been adopted and has been suitably modified so that it ‘fits’ the student’s learning needs. Teachers differentiate the curriculum so that they do not discriminate and teach to only a select group of students. Teachers offer students a variety of learning experiences to meet their different learning needs. Curriculum differentiation, therefore, is the process of modifying or adapting the curriculum according to the different ability levels of the students in one class. Teachers adapt or differentiate the curriculum by changing the content and methods for teaching and learning process. Each class is divided into different ability groups,
where the teaching is imparted as per the ability level of each group or the learners are organized into mixed ability groups in which the students with more experience help the students with less experience. Identification of the content is the most important component in curriculum differentiation. The content is selected keeping in view the factors, which will make learning an enjoyable and productive
experience. These factors include;
- being meaningful;
- students needs and interests;
- the environment; and
- more than just learning facts.
