Research & Evaluation

SANKALP has been conducting evaluation studies on issues of national/regional public importance with major policy ramifications to contribute towards to the process of national development.

SANKALP has undertaken a research project on “Atrocities against Women – A Study of Dowry Torture and Sexual Violence in the State of Orissa”, funded by the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of India; to assess the genesis, nature and extent of dowry-related torture and death as well as sexual violence in Orissa. The study covered 6 districts of Orissa; Khurda, Cuttack, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Phulbani and Raygada; representing developed, backward and tribal areas of the State.

The Organization has conducted an evaluation study of the Central Scheme of Creches / Day Care Centres for Children of Working / Ailing Mothers; funded by the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of India in the States of Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal.

An Evaluation of the Central Sector Scheme of National Reconstruction Corps (NRC) was entrusted to SANKALP by the Planning Commission, Government of India and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. The NRC scheme was launched in the country during 2000 as a pilot project in the Central Sector for a period of 2 years and its continuation beyond this period was subject to the evaluation of its performance and impact. The dual purpose of the scheme was to harness the vital youth energy on a sustained basis in the process of nation-building and to help the youth in attending self-development. The evaluation covered the functioning of the NRC scheme in 4 selected districts, namely i) Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), ii) Gurdaspur (Punjab), iii) Baran (Rajasthan), and iv) Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh). The study was intended to evaluate the outcome and impact of the scheme in achieving its objective and assess the viability and need to continue the scheme.

SANKALP conducted an evaluation study of the “Scheme of Setting up Educational Complexes in Low Literacy Pockets for the Development of Women’s Literacy” of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. The evaluation, entrusted by the Planning Commission, Government of India, assessed the outcome and impact of the scheme in promoting education among the tribal girls and improving the socio-economic status of the poor and marginalised tribal population through women’s education. The study covered 4 States; Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Rajasthan; wherein a total number of 27 implementing agencies/educational complexes in these States were visited.

SANKALP has been regularly participating in various Parliamentary Committees and the Government of India (including, Planning Commission) Committees on various issues of national importance and contributing on identified policy matters.
